Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. People working with children, young people or adults at risk must understand how to recognise concerns, respond appropriately and report them to the right person.

Our safeguarding training provides clear, practical guidance without unnecessary jargon. Learners leave understanding what to look for, what to do and—just as importantly—what not to do.

Training is delivered by experienced professionals with backgrounds in emergency services, education and workplace training.

Choose the Right Course

Level 1 Award in Awareness of Safeguarding

A practical introduction for anyone who may come into contact with children, young people or adults at risk.

Suitable for:

• School and nursery employees
• Activity instructors and coaches
• Volunteers and community groups
• Care and support workers
• Hospitality and leisure employees
• New staff requiring safeguarding awareness
• Anyone working with or supporting potentially vulnerable people

Course details:

• Duration: Four classroom hours
• Level: Level 1 Award in Awareness of Safeguarding
• Minimum age: 14 years
• Maximum group size: 12 learners
• Assessment: Written assessment containing open and multiple-choice questions
• Location: Your workplace or another suitable venue
• Expiry: The qualification does not have a fixed expiry date

Refresher training and continuing professional development remain important to ensure knowledge reflects current legislation, procedures and organisational policies.

Level 3 Award in Principles of Safeguarding

The full qualification title is the Level 3 Award in Principles of Safeguarding and Protecting Children, Young People or Vulnerable Adults.

This course provides a more detailed understanding for people with additional safeguarding responsibilities.

• Managers and supervisors
• Teachers and education professionals
• Coaches and activity instructors
• Care-sector employees
• Safeguarding representatives
• Employees responsible for receiving or reporting concerns
• Anyone requiring a nationally regulated safeguarding qualification

• Duration: One classroom-based day
• Level: Ofqual-regulated Level 3 Award
• Minimum age: 18 years
• Maximum group size: 12 learners
• Assessment: Practical activities and open and multiple-choice questioning
• Location: Your workplace or another suitable venue

What Will Learners Cover?

Understanding Safeguarding

• What safeguarding means
• Relevant safeguarding legislation and guidance
• Individual and organisational responsibilities
• The importance of creating a safe environment
• Protecting children, young people and adults at risk from abuse, neglect and exploitation

Recognising Abuse and Neglect

• Different forms of abuse
• Possible indicators of abuse or neglect
• Changes in behaviour or presentation
• Identifying concerns
• Understanding that abuse may be committed by someone in a position of trust

A concern does not arrive neatly labelled and attached to the correct form. Training helps learners recognise when something does not appear right and understand what should happen next.

Responding to a Disclosure

Learners will explore how to respond when someone shares a safeguarding concern, including:

• Listening carefully and remaining calm
• Taking the person seriously
• Avoiding leading questions
• Not promising confidentiality
• Explaining what will happen next
• Recording information accurately
• Reporting the concern promptly

The learner’s job is to listen, record and report—not launch their own detective series.

Recording and Reporting Concerns

• Following organisational procedures
• Knowing who concerns should be reported to
• Recording facts rather than assumptions
• Sharing information appropriately
• Understanding confidentiality
• Escalating concerns when necessary

Allegations and Complaints

The Level 3 course also explores:

• Responding to allegations
• Reporting concerns involving employees or volunteers
• Managing complaints appropriately
• Roles and responsibilities
• Professional boundaries
• Protecting the person raising the concern
• Safeguarding yourself while reporting appropriately

Practical and Sensitive Training

Safeguarding can involve difficult and sensitive subjects. Our courses are delivered respectfully, clearly and in a supportive learning environment.

Training may include:

• Realistic safeguarding scenarios
• Group discussion
• Recognising possible indicators
• Responding to disclosures
• Recording exercises
• Examining reporting routes
• Reviewing workplace procedures

Where appropriate, examples can be adapted to your organisation. Safeguarding in a school, care environment, activity centre or community group may share the same principles, but the procedures and reporting routes will not always be identical.

We can also help complete a training needs analysis to identify which employees require awareness training and which need a more detailed qualification.

Assessment and Certification

Level 1 Assessment

The Level 1 qualification is assessed through a written paper containing open and multiple-choice questions. Learners must pass the assessment to receive the qualification.

The four hours of classroom training can be delivered over half a day or divided across a maximum of two weeks, provided each session lasts at least two hours.

Level 3 Assessment

The Level 3 qualification uses a range of assessment methods, including practical activities and open and multiple-choice questioning.

Learners who successfully complete the assessment receive an Ofqual-regulated national Level 3 Award.

Supporting Your Safeguarding Responsibilities

Safeguarding training should be supported by your organisation’s own:

• Safeguarding policy
• Reporting procedures
• Named safeguarding contacts
• Safer recruitment arrangements
• Staff code of conduct
• Record-keeping systems
• Supervision and refresher training

Completing a course is important, but safeguarding cannot simply be filed away with the certificate and emergency tea supplies.

Not Sure Which Course You Need?

Choose Level 1 Awareness of Safeguarding for general employees, volunteers or anyone requiring an introduction to recognising and reporting concerns.

Choose Level 3 Principles of Safeguarding for people requiring a more detailed understanding or holding additional safeguarding responsibilities.

The Level 3 qualification should not automatically be described as Designated Safeguarding Lead training unless it meets the specific requirements of your sector and organisation.
