Choose the Right Course

Level 1 Health and Safety in the Workplace

A clear introduction to workplace health and safety, suitable for employees in any industry or sector.

It is particularly useful for:

• New employees and workplace inductions
• Employees requiring general safety awareness
• Contractors and temporary staff
• Volunteers
• Young people entering the workplace

Course details:

• Duration: Four hours
• Level: Level 1 Health and Safety in the Workplace
• Previous experience: None required
• Minimum age: 14 years
• Maximum group size: 16 learners
• Assessment: Ongoing instructor assessment and a multiple-choice question paper
• Location: Your workplace or another suitable venue

Learners under 16 can complete the qualification but cannot take responsibility for a workplace health and safety role until they reach 16. Employers remain responsible for determining whether an individual is suitable for that role.

Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace

A more detailed one-day course for employees who require a greater understanding of workplace safety or may be taking on additional responsibilities.

It is suitable for:

• Health and safety representatives
• Supervisors and team leaders
• Employees with additional safety responsibilities
• Staff involved in risk assessments
• Anyone progressing towards higher-level health and safety training

• Level: Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace
• Minimum age: 16 years
• Maximum group size: 16 learners
• Assessment: Ongoing instructor assessment and a multiple-choice question paper
• Location: Your workplace or another suitable venue

• Individual responsibilities
• The possible consequences of poor health and safety

Hazards and Risks

• Understanding the difference between a hazard and a risk
• How workplace hazards and risks are controlled
• Recognising unsafe conditions and behaviour
• Reporting concerns appropriately

Health and Safety Communication

• Understanding workplace safety information
• Safety signs, instructions and procedures
• Communicating concerns
• Knowing where to find relevant information

The aim is to help learners recognise potential problems before they become accidents, investigations or strongly worded emails.

What Does the Level 2 Course Cover?

Roles and Responsibilities

• Employer and employee responsibilities
• Health, safety and welfare in the workplace
• The role of health and safety representatives
• Supporting a positive workplace safety culture

Risk Assessment

• The purpose and value of risk assessments
• Identifying hazards
• Considering who may be harmed and how
• Selecting suitable control measures
• Reviewing and updating assessments

A risk assessment should help people work safely. It should not be copied from a completely different workplace and left in a folder since 2009.

Workplace Hazards

• Recognising common workplace hazards
• Identifying appropriate control measures
• Reporting and escalating concerns
• Reducing the likelihood of accidents and ill health

Incidents and Accidents

• Responding appropriately to workplace incidents
• Reporting and recording accidents
• Understanding why incidents should be investigated
• Learning from accidents and near misses
• Helping prevent similar incidents from happening again

Practical and Relevant Training

We adapt the course to the needs of your organisation wherever possible.

A school, warehouse, office, factory and outdoor activity centre will face very different hazards. Their training should reflect that—although nearly every workplace appears to have at least one mysterious trip hazard that everybody has learned to step over.

Courses can include:

• Workplace-specific examples
• Group discussions
• Realistic scenarios
• Hazard-spotting activities
• Risk-assessment exercises
• Reviews of relevant workplace procedures

We can also help complete a training needs analysis to identify which employees need training and which course level is most appropriate.

Assessment and Certification

Both qualification routes include ongoing assessment by the instructor and a multiple-choice question paper.

Successful learners receive the relevant Level 1 or Level 2 Health and Safety in the Workplace qualification.

These qualifications do not have a fixed expiry date. However, refresher training and regular updates are important whenever:

• Workplace risks change
• Policies or procedures are updated
• New equipment or working practices are introduced
• An employee’s responsibilities change
• Knowledge needs refreshing

A certificate may not expire, but memories occasionally do.
